City builders worth a climb
for explorers at heart

Some evenings call for raising a city one stone at a time. Our three picks are free-to-play and reward patient growth: a Mesoamerican settlement among the trees, a town that travels onward from the Stone Age and a riverside capital beside the Nile. Each opens in a tab and asks nothing to get going.

01 · Mesoamerican strategy

Tentlan

Raise a settlement deep in a jungle world shaped by ancient Mesoamerica and turn it into a thriving city. You gather resources, unlock knowledge, train defenders and decide with your alliance where to expand next on a living map.

Good for
Planners who like deciding today what their city needs next week.
Typical session

Your first session
  1. Keep food, wood and stone growing in balance; a shortfall in one stalls the rest.
  2. Find an alliance in the first days, since neighbours who help are worth more than walls.
  3. Line up building and research before you log off so nothing sits idle.

Forge of Empires key art
02 · City through the ages

Forge of Empires

Start with a handful of huts and guide your town through history, era after era, as a research tree reveals new homes, workshops and wonders. Neighbours can lend a hand, guilds take on shared goals, and small battles on a hex map open new provinces.

Good for
Builders who enjoy reaching a new age and seeing the town change with it.

  1. Spend research points every visit, because each new era unlocks better buildings.
  2. Help your neighbours daily; the favour usually comes straight back.
  3. Swap old buildings for newer ones as space runs short.

Anocris key art
03 · Ancient Egyptian strategy

Anocris

Settle on the fertile Nile and shape a small village into a city of granaries, workshops and grand monuments. A careful economy fuels everything, and you decide when to build, when to defend and when to push out towards the neighbours.

Good for
Thoughtful players who like getting the economy right before anything else.
Typical session
A few brief visits scattered across the day

Your first session
  1. Grow production buildings first, as they pay for every later step.
  2. Look for a tribe early; shared defence makes the middle stages calmer.
  3. Never leave the research queue empty, even overnight.

What the price tag really is

You can sign up and play each of these games all the way through without spending a penny. Nothing locks you out if you never open the store.

Each studio keeps an optional in-game shop for premium currency, boosts or decorations. You can leave it unopened forever; if relatives share the machine, look over the purchase settings on every studio account.

Laying the first stones

Each game card has a button that opens the official homepage in a separate tab. Registration there is with the studio itself, normally by email, after which a first settlement appears within moments.

Follow the guided quests during the opening session. They introduce building, resources and neighbours one at a time, which makes the later choices far easier.

Cities that build while you nap

These games carry on in real time, so building work finishes and stores keep filling even after the tab is shut. Handy when free minutes arrive in scraps across the week.

Short visits are for collecting, queuing the next task and replying to allies. Save a longer evening for weightier calls: a new district, an alliance choice or a march into fresh territory.

Guarding each studio account

Every game account belongs to its studio, which means logging in on the studio website itself. Use a different password per game and turn on two-step verification wherever the studio supports it.

Real support staff will never ask for a password over chat or email. Anyone dangling free gems to get your sign-in details wants to hijack the account.

What earned a spot in the canopy

  • Each one plays in an ordinary desktop browser, so there is no client to install.
  • Each one costs nothing to join, and months of play need no spending; extras stay optional.
  • Each one keeps building while you are away, so brief visits still count.
  • Each one has a long track record and a lively community of players.

No. A regular desktop browser handles all three. Forge of Empires offers a phone app as well, though you can happily skip it.

No. Joining and playing are free in all three; each one offers optional purchases that you can skip.

Their own studios build and run them. We just send you along to each official homepage, and registration is handled there.

No. Each studio runs its own registration, so you set up one free account per game.

Yes. Laptop screens suit all three, although placing buildings feels nicer with a mouse in hand.

Forge of Empires has the gentlest early steps. Choose Tentlan for a jungle setting or Anocris for life along the Nile.

Very little. Because all three keep running in your absence, a few short visits a day are enough to keep a city growing.
